Opening day on Snowmass Mountain: New Snow and New Restaurants

Nov. 27 saw in the turkeys, the stuffing and the season’s first skiers. Although retailers reported a slower opening weekend than last year, the new restaurants had a promising start and spirits were high and hopeful.

Mountain conditions

Ski lifts revved Thursday morning on a rather snow-barren Snowmass mountain. But true to tradition, once the mountain opened up the snow started falling. By Friday morning five inches of powder had covered Snowmass, Saturday saw another four inches and Sunday another two.

Opening day in Aspen and Snowmass

The Aspen/Snowmass ski season kicked in yesterday not with a bang, not with a whimper, but something in between.

About 800 people turned out for Aspen Mountain’s opening and about 1,500 schussed on Snowmass, according to rough estimates by the Aspen Skiing Co., which is using a brand new ticket scanning system and didn’t have precise numbers Thursday afternoon.

Take the Bus to Snowmass

SNOWMASS VILLAGE- Parking issues have plagued Snowmass Village for some time, but with lowered parking fees and a newly integrated skier shuttle, previously teeming lots will hopefully lighten their loads this season.

RFTA has recently unveiled its new cheaper and faster inter-mountain transfer system. They have combined the regular service with the free Village Shuttle routes. Now, instead of having to catch the shuttle at specific stops, skiers hopping between the four mountains can thumb a bus down at any RFTA stop.
