Lance Armstrong Takes 12 Hours of Snowmass
Lance Armstrong and his Livestrong team won this weekend's exciting 12 hours of Snowmass.
“If it wasn’t for these two guys, we wouldn’t have been successful,” said Armstrong, who teamed with Zanni and Max Taam, a 25-year-old ski patroller, to churn out 17 laps on the 7-mile technical course in just under 12 hours. “I was certainly not the strongest guy in the race.
“These two guys made up the difference on the team.”
This was about the equivalent of Michael Jordan thanking his teammates for their passes after suiting up for a local 3-on-3 charity hoops tournament.
The 12 Hours of Snowmass, which sends racers out onto the trails of Snowmass from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, is part of the prestigious Rocky Mountain Ultra Regional Endurance Series and benefits the Aspen Youth Center and Extreme Sports Camp. The event caps off an extraordinary mountain weekend that also includes three days of hot air balloon competitions over Snowmass. Nearly 30 balloons, including the tallest balloon in the U.S., the Energizer Bunny Hot Hare (think taller than the Statue of Liberty), take to the skies on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings. A special hot air balloon night glow, barbecue and concert with Americana artist Jeff Finlan starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday night as well. Also this weekend is the Snowmass Wine Festival, which kicks off with a Winemaker's Dinner on Friday and fills the pedestrian Snowmass Mall with over 200 wines to sample, cuisine from regional chefs, a silent auction, and live music to benefit local valley nonprofits on Saturday.
"We thought this weekend couldn't get any better, but we were wrong!" says Snowmass Village Marketing Director Susan Hamley. "We're thrilled to welcome Lance Armstrong to Snowmass Village, and we're all going to be out there rooting the teams on. This is an incredible fall weekend to head to Snowmass, with perfect weather for all these events on the way."
